VU: FROM CRIMINAL TO COUNSELOR! ๐โ
A Life Changed through Christ.
northeastofthewell.org/lives-changed.php
"My family and I came here from Vietnam when I was 9. I struggled with English, fitting in, and was bullied most of my childhood. At 12, I started using crack cocaine and alcohol. Feeling so disconnected from myself as a teenager that drugs, gangs and women became my daily reality and end-goal. In a gang, I finally felt like I belonged and was protected. I was in and out of โjuviโ for 6 years; completely dedicated to gangs and drugs, no matter the cost. I picked dope and women over my own daughter and my parents. Long story short, I was facing 25 to life, but ended up serving 9 years in prison after committing strong-arm robbery. I was so paranoid and crazed by the drugs I was using in prison, that one day I lashed out at a random inmate, which resulted in a stabbing. The violent encounters I was involved in while incarcerated are something I have absolutely no pride in now.
โฆStill drugged out and hopeless after I got out, but wanting to change for the first time in my life. God forgave me time after time, but I continued to fall short, not keep my word, and do all the terrible things I was familiar with. Criminal activity continued, landing me 2 years at a rehab program with little success. After Dream Center discharged me, I went to Safe Refuge in Long Beach. This was the turning point for me โ I prayed: โGod, whatever you do, do not let me forget you again.โ Through Safe Refuge, I met NorthEast of the Well. Man, I havenโt missed any of their Monday, Wednesday OR Friday Zoom gatherings since May. I send their Zoom to everyone I know - even people from other states are now joining from my links. This lights me up! I am so inspired by NorthEast and how they love God wholeheartedly. I support them all the way. They have truly helped me become the man I know I should be. I am so proud to now say: I was the outcast who became the witness.
I have been sober for 3 years and recently got a great job! I live for God now; He gets me through every day. I know I will always fall back into a hole without the Lord. He has restored my family, specifically my relationship with my 21 year old daughter. I see her as much as I can now; and somehow, she has forgiven me. I graduate from Safe Refuge in May and will be back with my family, prepared to make up for all I have done. I am completing school this year to be a drug and alcohol counselor. An old criminal, gangster and drug addict now getting a 3.1 in college and crying out to God every single day. From jail to a job - I cannot believe it. I am so thankful for NorthEast and the Lord."

FAITHFUL ON THE FRONTLINES๐
Our battle against human trafficking speaks to the heart of our mission at NorthEast โ to bring Godโs Word into hard-to-reach, dark, desperate places.
To get involved, learn more, or sign up to join our street outreach team, visit โ NorthEastoftheWell.org/trafficking
โA significant number of those we serve have been trafficked during their lifetime. This is one of the many reasons why we have chosen to step onto the frontlines of trafficking sites. On the streets of LA County on any given night, we meet with over 30 girls being trafficked; shivering, barely clothed, waiting for the next โJohnโ to objectify them. We are putting our boots on the ground to empower the women by showing up as: โThe Church,โ praying with them, and offering next-step solutions as well as care-packages that assure them they are seen, known and loved by God.โ
Truths about the Sex-Industry:
* 89% want to escape but see no options for survival
* 90% of women in sex industry were sexually abused as children
* More women in sex industry today than any time in history
* 84% of women in prostitution are under control of a pimp/trafficker
* Mortality/death rate is 240x more in comparison to other professions
* Women in the sex commercial industry have PTSD similar to veterans
* ยฝ of all victims are minors; 70% of them being children from the foster care systemPhotos from NorthEast of the Well's post ... See moreSee less

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY THIS MONTH & EVERY MONTH!
"I pray for the day when people of color will have an equal seat at the table and not feel the need to create their own table just to be heard. Because on that day I would have seen manifested what I have prayed for years, โGod, let Your Kingdom come, let Your will be done, concerning racial justice, on earth as it is in heaven.โ

THE JANICE WE KNOW TODAY ๐ซ A STORY OF TRUE TRANSFORMATION:
"I was 14 when I started using meth and drinking alcohol. My dad was deported to Mexico when I was 10; I have not seen him since. My mom was an addict - still is. I was left to raise myself, so drinking and drugs became a way to escape. After my little sister was born with drugs in her system, we spent a year in foster care before going to live with my grandma. But my addiction and sexual promiscuity didn't stop. When I got pregnant, I wanted to change. I got sober, but fell right back into my addiction by the time my son was two. For years, we were homeless, sleeping in cars, motels, hanging out with the wrong people. I would drink, black out and not remember where I was. I was having sex, sometimes forcibly, with men I didn't know.
After many violent encounters with my son's father, I knew I had to get out. I entered Heritage House, a recovery program for women and children, but left after two days. I put myself back into a vicious cycle and before long, I was pregnant again. Having no where else to go, I returned to Heritage House. That's when God met me through NorthEast of the Well. At the very first Bible study, my mind began to shift - I began to see that change was possible. When NorthEast gifted me with a beautiful new Bible - another first! - I felt a ray of hope.
For once in my life, I put my sons' needs ahead of my own and made the decision to place them in foster care while I began a journey of recovery. Even though giving them up was the hardest thing I'd ever done, NorthEast was there every step of the way. NorthEast would call, checking in, reminding me that God had a plan for us. In 2019, when I got baptized at NorthEast, I realized my life really HAD changed. From that moment forward, I made a promise to myself and publicly, to follow and live for Christ.
Today, my boys are back with me and we live at Eli House, a residential program for women and children. I am learning to be the mother they need and deserve; I even started my first job! NorthEast of the Well has been a lifeline for us - I am on Zoom every Monday evening for the NorthEast service. I love the worship - it feels like those songs were made for me! I want to be like the NorthEast women, setting an example of what's possible with God. Recently I was asked to write some scripture cards for NorthEast to hand out - I am blessed to serve, even in small ways. "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" (Jer. 29:11) These are the words I live by."

Prayer on MLK Event ~ Jesus is Justice!
NorthEast was honored to join in on the โPrayer on MLK Eventโ in Long Beach. As we stood on the side of the road, we stood for justice, we stood for Jesus. We wrote 1 powerful word on our mask that encompassed the unique prayer of our heart. Signs of scripture and social justice were held high, uplifting words were spoken, and powerful worship songs were sang.
We took turns lifting up vocal prayers of repentance, hope, and restoration over the land, and ended in communion. We are so grateful for what the Lord is doing in our nation and beyond. God is so good!Photos from NorthEast of the Well's post ... See moreSee less

Letter from Laura Suk (Founder and Executive Director)
-- A Decade of Ministry --
As we enter a new decade of ministry, the challenges of the past have taught us that, even in times of change, God's Word does not. The uncertainty of a "new normal" in a post-pandemic season will not deter us from our core mission, as we find creative new ways to bring hope and a path of healing into hard-to-reach places, through the Word of God and the sharing of our lives.
With change comes opportunity. Especially during 2020, the continued presence of NorthEast has both strengthened existing partnerships and opened new doors for the future. This year, we will be working closely with organizations like Gems Uncovered, Forgotten Children and others to reach more women victimized by sexual exploitation and trafficking. In addition, we will continue to expand into new treatment programs, sober living and safe houses throughout Southern California, empowering new leaders to replicate our ministry model in new communities.
Literally hundreds of supportersโindividuals, churches, businesses and moreโhave equipped, encouraged and sustained us throughout the past decade. We hope you'll join us as we begin the next ten years with confident expectation in the power and direction of the Holy Spirit to change lives for generations to come.

As we look into the New Year, let us remember what the Lord has done for us, and will continue to do for us. Like the song below reminds us -
He has made us whole.
He has restored us piece by piece.
Push play & sing along with us as we step into this new chapter that Christ has paved before us! ~~
"I see shattered
You see whole
I see broken
But You see beautiful
And You're helping me to believe
You're restoring me piece by piece
There's nothing too dirty
That You can't make worthy
You wash me in mercy
I am clean"

Merry Christmas to our amazing community! While we are saddened that we cannot hold our large annual Christmas gatherings this season, we are blessed by our faithful community members who have stuck with us through this difficult and ever-changing year. This group of people in particular (seen in photos), have not missed one weekly zoom bible study/gathering since the pandemic started! Their commitment to the Lord is inspiring, and to thank them for their faithfulness, we held a small Christmas gathering on Friday at Little Brown Church in LB, with worship by Lauren, a Christmas message by Pastor Gail, communion, a delicious meal and goodie bags!

A Story of Change - Chris ๐ฆ๐๐ผ
In May, 2019, two days after entering Action Alliance, a sober living home in Santa Ana and less than a week after taking her last drink, Chris met NorthEast of the Well. Someone yelled โBible study!โ Suddenly, she found herself sitting in a room with women who were singing and talking about Jesus. โI felt uncomfortable, I didnโt understand, but I was willing to do just about anything to stay sober.โ
Growing up in a home where alcohol was a โpopular pastime,โ Chris excelled academically and was a practicing attorney by age 23. As constant pressure and long hours took their toll, she drank more and more "to take the edge off." For 20 years she struggled - racking up 4 DUIs, even traveling to Costa Rica, trying to outrun the drinking. But no matter where she went, there it was. She became suicidal: โIt was never going to end, I couldnโt control it, so whatโs the point?โ Thatโs when a friend suggested Action Alliance.
At that first Bible study, Chris signed up to be baptized with NorthEast, with no idea what it really meant. But over time, things started to make sense, as she came to understand the significance of this decision, the deep impact it had on her life, and the change it made in her heart. She saw โit was either my will or Godโs,โ and she surrendered. Now, the anxiety and need to perform are gone, replaced by a desire to carry the message of Jesus to others. โI give my best every day and leave the results up to Him.โA Story of Change - Chris ๐ฆ๐๐ผ

SEE HOW BEN'S GIVING BACK ---
In preparation for the BIGGEST GIVING EVENT OF THE YEAR, weโre sharing how Ben, a long time member of our community, saved up SIX MONTHS of his tithe and delivered it to our NorthEast office just recently. This wonderful surprise visit demonstrates the transformation of a former methamphetamine dealer and addict into someone modeling the biblical principle of GIVING BACK.
Are you inspired by Ben like we are here at NorthEast? If so, please join this global movement of giving back on Dec. 1st for #GivingTuesday!
PICTURED - Ben not only gave back by donating, but also through preaching, as seen here on our annual Jail to Jerusalem trip last year!
