~ A Great Day with "Changing Strides" ~

We are blessed to be working alongside Changing Strides to empower children in our community through equine therapy!

A handful of kids ages 6-14 from the NorthEast community left the therapy horses feeling full of excitement. Beyond that, they gained insight on problem solving and social skills, self worth affirmations, academic achievement, and more. 🐴🐴🐴Photos from NorthEast of the Well's post

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY THIS MONTH & EVERY MONTH!

"I pray for the day when people of color will have an equal seat at the table and not feel the need to create their own table just to be heard. Because on that day I would have seen manifested what I have prayed for years, “God, let Your Kingdom come, let Your will be done, concerning racial justice, on earth as it is in heaven.”

THE JANICE WE KNOW TODAY 💫 A STORY OF TRUE TRANSFORMATION:

"I was 14 when I started using meth and drinking alcohol. My dad was deported to Mexico when I was 10; I have not seen him since. My mom was an addict - still is. I was left to raise myself, so drinking and drugs became a way to escape. After my little sister was born with drugs in her system, we spent a year in foster care before going to live with my grandma. But my addiction and sexual promiscuity didn't stop. When I got pregnant, I wanted to change. I got sober, but fell right back into my addiction by the time my son was two. For years, we were homeless, sleeping in cars, motels, hanging out with the wrong people. I would drink, black out and not remember where I was. I was having sex, sometimes forcibly, with men I didn't know.

After many violent encounters with my son's father, I knew I had to get out. I entered Heritage House, a recovery program for women and children, but left after two days. I put myself back into a vicious cycle and before long, I was pregnant again. Having no where else to go, I returned to Heritage House. That's when God met me through NorthEast of the Well. At the very first Bible study, my mind began to shift - I began to see that change was possible. When NorthEast gifted me with a beautiful new Bible - another first! - I felt a ray of hope.

For once in my life, I put my sons' needs ahead of my own and made the decision to place them in foster care while I began a journey of recovery. Even though giving them up was the hardest thing I'd ever done, NorthEast was there every step of the way. NorthEast would call, checking in, reminding me that God had a plan for us. In 2019, when I got baptized at NorthEast, I realized my life really HAD changed. From that moment forward, I made a promise to myself and publicly, to follow and live for Christ.

Today, my boys are back with me and we live at Eli House, a residential program for women and children. I am learning to be the mother they need and deserve; I even started my first job! NorthEast of the Well has been a lifeline for us - I am on Zoom every Monday evening for the NorthEast service. I love the worship - it feels like those songs were made for me! I want to be like the NorthEast women, setting an example of what's possible with God. Recently I was asked to write some scripture cards for NorthEast to hand out - I am blessed to serve, even in small ways. "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" (Jer. 29:11) These are the words I live by."

Prayer on MLK Event ~ Jesus is Justice!

NorthEast was honored to join in on the “Prayer on MLK Event” in Long Beach. As we stood on the side of the road, we stood for justice, we stood for Jesus. We wrote 1 powerful word on our mask that encompassed the unique prayer of our heart. Signs of scripture and social justice were held high, uplifting words were spoken, and powerful worship songs were sang.

We took turns lifting up vocal prayers of repentance, hope, and restoration over the land, and ended in communion. We are so grateful for what the Lord is doing in our nation and beyond. God is so good!Photos from NorthEast of the Well's post

NorthEast of the Well

Letter from Laura Suk (Founder and Executive Director)

-- A Decade of Ministry --

As we enter a new decade of ministry, the challenges of the past have taught us that, even in times of change, God's Word does not. The uncertainty of a "new normal" in a post-pandemic season will not deter us from our core mission, as we find creative new ways to bring hope and a path of healing into hard-to-reach places, through the Word of God and the sharing of our lives.

With change comes opportunity. Especially during 2020, the continued presence of NorthEast has both strengthened existing partnerships and opened new doors for the future. This year, we will be working closely with organizations like Gems Uncovered, Forgotten Children and others to reach more women victimized by sexual exploitation and trafficking. In addition, we will continue to expand into new treatment programs, sober living and safe houses throughout Southern California, empowering new leaders to replicate our ministry model in new communities.

Literally hundreds of supporters—individuals, churches, businesses and more—have equipped, encouraged and sustained us throughout the past decade. We hope you'll join us as we begin the next ten years with confident expectation in the power and direction of the Holy Spirit to change lives for generations to come.

We received the most incredible bundles of toy donations from Fresh Beginnings ministry (thank you Bill)! 🧸 🌈

After unloading our van FULL of toys (last picture), we began to distribute them to deserving children throughout our community! 🙌🏼

Not only did parents & children come by our office to pick out their favorite toys, but we also dropped the gifts off to our various programs including: Flossy Lewis, His Nesting Place, LA Teen Challenge, Casa Teresa, Serenity House, Campus, Vera’s Sanctuary, Prototypes, Rhino House, New Life Beginnings, & more!! What a blessing! 💫Photos from NorthEast of the Well's post

As we look into the New Year, let us remember what the Lord has done for us, and will continue to do for us. Like the song below reminds us -
He has made us whole.
He has restored us piece by piece.

Push play & sing along with us as we step into this new chapter that Christ has paved before us! ~~

"I see shattered
You see whole
I see broken
But You see beautiful
And You're helping me to believe
You're restoring me piece by piece
There's nothing too dirty
That You can't make worthy
You wash me in mercy
I am clean"

“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him…” – John 1:9-10 ✨

Merry Christmas to our amazing community! While we are saddened that we cannot hold our large annual Christmas gatherings this season, we are blessed by our faithful community members who have stuck with us through this difficult and ever-changing year. This group of people in particular (seen in photos), have not missed one weekly zoom bible study/gathering since the pandemic started! Their commitment to the Lord is inspiring, and to thank them for their faithfulness, we held a small Christmas gathering on Friday at Little Brown Church in LB, with worship by Lauren, a Christmas message by Pastor Gail, communion, a delicious meal and goodie bags!

Merry Christmas to all — & remember,  “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” – 2 Corinthians 9:15 💐✨Photos from NorthEast of the Well's post

A Story of Change - Chris 🦋🙏🏼

In May, 2019, two days after entering Action Alliance, a sober living home in Santa Ana and less than a week after taking her last drink, Chris met NorthEast of the Well. Someone yelled “Bible study!” Suddenly, she found herself sitting in a room with women who were singing and talking about Jesus. “I felt uncomfortable, I didn’t understand, but I was willing to do just about anything to stay sober.”

Growing up in a home where alcohol was a “popular pastime,” Chris excelled academically and was a practicing attorney by age 23. As constant pressure and long hours took their toll, she drank more and more "to take the edge off." For 20 years she struggled - racking up 4 DUIs, even traveling to Costa Rica, trying to outrun the drinking. But no matter where she went, there it was. She became suicidal: “It was never going to end, I couldn’t control it, so what’s the point?” That’s when a friend suggested Action Alliance.

At that first Bible study, Chris signed up to be baptized with NorthEast, with no idea what it really meant. But over time, things started to make sense, as she came to understand the significance of this decision, the deep impact it had on her life, and the change it made in her heart. She saw “it was either my will or God’s,” and she surrendered. Now, the anxiety and need to perform are gone, replaced by a desire to carry the message of Jesus to others. “I give my best every day and leave the results up to Him.”A Story of Change - Chris 🦋🙏🏼

Join us TODAY for #GivingTuesday by modeling the biblical principle of GIVING BACK, just as Darrell has!

- Give in any amount at www.northeastofthewell.org/give

Darrell Allen has been tithing a part of his veteran’s benefits to NorthEast of the Well for over two years! After returning to civilian life, he heard about NorthEast and came to one of our Long Beach gatherings in 2017. Soon after, he began to tithe to the ministry! Darrell quickly became a “regular” and was baptized by NorthEast in the spring of 2019.

After COVID shut down in-person gatherings last spring, Darrell immediately called our offices, wanting to ensure he could still support the ministry that has helped restore his faith. Thank you Darrell – your faithful support is a blessing to so many.

Are you inspired by Darrell like we are here at NorthEast? If so, please join this global movement of giving back TODAY for #GivingTuesday!

SEE HOW BEN'S GIVING BACK ---

In preparation for the BIGGEST GIVING EVENT OF THE YEAR, we’re sharing how Ben, a long time member of our community, saved up SIX MONTHS of his tithe and delivered it to our NorthEast office just recently. This wonderful surprise visit demonstrates the transformation of a former methamphetamine dealer and addict into someone modeling the biblical principle of GIVING BACK.

Are you inspired by Ben like we are here at NorthEast? If so, please join this global movement of giving back on Dec. 1st for #GivingTuesday!

PICTURED - Ben not only gave back by donating, but also through preaching, as seen here on our annual Jail to Jerusalem trip last year!

NorthEast of the Well

Fall 2020 ~~ A letter from our Founder & Executive Director, Laura Suk:

"In the book of John, chapter 21, Peter is restored to Jesus after denying him three times. As Peter reaffirms his love and devotion to Christ, Jesus tells him to “feed my sheep.”

NorthEast of the Well is a ministry where ordinary people who have been restored are called to “feed his sheep,” with God’s Word, making faith visible through the witness of our own lives.

The ongoing health crisis has brought new ways in which we can nourish the body, mind and spirit of those in hard to reach places. With restrictions easing, we recently resumed small, outdoor Bible studies at a few programs. This month, we will return to the streets of LA to reach women engaged in sex trades, alongside our partner, Gems Uncovered.

Our first virtual event, “10,000 Reasons,” highlighted stories from the many lives transformed through NorthEast over the past decade of ministry. We heard from community members, volunteers, ministry partners and supporters about the impact NorthEast has had on them, and we outlined 7 projects (seen on the following page) that will help us build a legacy of hope for the future.

We are deeply grateful for everyone who has supported our ministry with their time, their gifts, their finances. Thanks to volunteers from the Women at the Well, Trabuco Presbyterian, Village Church, Orange Coast Community Church, St. Andrew’s, and Trellis, who have provided an abundance of food, supplies, Bibles and more; to Cabi Clothing for outfitting over 50 women who are reentering the work force; and to all who stand alongside us in this Kingdom work.

Please continue to partner with us as we embark on a new decade of ministry with your sacrificial gift in any amount."
